Evolving ideas of intelligence

Real genius often looks anything but — we're evolving, our ideas of intelligence need to evolve too.

Intelligence is neurodiverse

My favorite genius once told me that he had narrower access to his brain functions, and so he had overdeveloped the parts he could get to - in his case that was biological patterns and graphic design.

If society wants to use the insights that advanced abilities can give us, we need to accept neurodiversity, start letting people do what they are actually good at, and stop telling them in advance what that's going to be.

Intelligence is creative

Computers are going to automate our routine cognitive functions. While we have great creative ideas of what AI would look like, we don't actually have AI yet - computers only do what we tell them to do. They don't generate novel insights.

More than ever - it's important that we let people pursue and develop their passions. The answers are going to be in our quirky, creative brains and the trial-and-error process of making those dreams a pragmatic reality.
