A Good Amount of Insanity

I can't stop laughing about this request in my feed! (Quora is my go-to procrastination site and I'm overdue writing an SBIR grant.)

Such a great question.

So right now my absolute favorite author is Jed McKenna and he says “sanity is a numbers game”.

This is hilarious for those of us educated in psychiatry because the DSM is actually the consensus of a panel of experts, so not only is it a numbers game, as the lowest level of medical evidence, it’s also a BAD numbers game.

My chief beef with psychiatry is it only studies one end of the bell-curve, it doesn’t look at intellectual or artistic genius and completely misses neurodiversity, higher consciousness states, or positive disintegration.

Psychiatry is very good at differentiating “normal” from “not-normal”. But it equates “not-normal” with “pathological” and completely forgets that there are two ends to the goddamn bell curve.

So a “good amount of insanity” (as my new muse Mohammad so eloquently put it) is the UPPER end of the bell curve.

If you want to what that looks like follow our blog and take a look at some of our delinquent savants. But I’ll give you a teaser: genius is creative, prosocial, and atypical.
